מדענים במאיץ החלקיקים בסר"ן שבשווייץ מודיעים היום על סימנים מבטיחים לקיומו של חלקיק היגס. מדעני מכון ויצמן למדע הם שותפים קבועים בניסוי האטלס, אחד משני הניסויים המרכזיים הנעשים במאיץ ההדרונים הגדול (LHC), במטרה לחקור את החלקיקים האלמנטריים. שני הניסויים במאיץ, אטלס ו-CMS, מחפשים אחר חלקיק בוזון-היגס, אשר נחשב לחלקיק שמקנה לכל יתר החלקיקים האלמנטריים את המאסה שלהם

צוות מדענים בין-לאומי, ובהם מדענים ממכון ויצמן למדע, הודיעו היום (חמישי) כי הצליחו להשיג את הרגישות הרבה ביותר עד כה, בחיפוש אחר חלקיקי החומר האפל, שלפי תיאוריה רווחת, מהווים יותר מ-80% מהחומר ביקום. המדענים לא הצליחו למצוא עדות לקיומו של חומר אפל, אבל הניסוי שביצעו הראה שעלה בידם לפתח דרך לביצוע מדידה רגישה במיוחד, שתוכל למדוד בעתיד חלקיקי חומר אפל – אם הם אכן קיימים
